Alla vigilia di un discorso che Hitler deve tenere in una birreria di Monaco, nel 1938, l'orologiaio Georg Elser lavora nell'ombra per preparare un attentato, con l'aiuto di una cameriera del locale dalla quale aspetta un figlio. Le sue precauzioni però non riescono a impedire i sospetti di un ufficiale delle SS. Brandauer regista è tronfio e accademico, e come attore è un gigione senza freni.
